Wrap Deformers

Wrap deformers create an effect similar to a lattice, but rather than deforming a surface using a simple grid, any object or objects can be used. The objects used by wrap deformers to deform a surface are referred to as influence objects. You may want to display these influence objects as wireframes, even when the view is shaded, so they don't obscure your view of the model.

To create a wrap deformer:

1.

Select the object you want to be deformed.

2.

-select the object you want to use as an influence object (Figure 13.50).

Figure 13.50. Here a low-resolution sphere will be used as an influence object to deform a higher-resolution sphere.

3.

Select Deform > Create Wrap.

4.

In component mode (press ), select one or more points of the influence object.

5.

Press , and move the points.

The points of the object to which the wrap deformer is applied move proportionately (Figure 13.51).

Figure 13.51. Moving the points of a wrap deformer's influence object modifies the object it deforms.

To display an influence object as a wireframe:

1.

Select the influence object.

2.

Open the Attribute Editor by clicking its icon on the right side of the status line or by pressing .

3.

In the Attribute Editor, click the arrow next to Object Display and then the arrow next to Drawing Overrides.

4.

Select Enable Overrides, and then deselect Shading.

The influence object is no longer shaded, and it's visible as a wireframe even in shaded mode (Figure 13.52).

Figure 13.52. The influence object is displayed as a wireframe, even though the view is shaded. This lets you see the object being deformed while using the influence object to deform it.
