Chapter 8.  Administering Packages

Most people who have some contact with computers will know that you can go to your local branch of PC World and buy a software package. This could be a spreadsheet, a word processor, or maybe a game. Packages also exist for Solaris, but they are not necessarily shrink-wrapped and almost certainly aren't available from a mainstream store.

A package can be defined as a collection of programs and/or files that provide certain functionality along with a method of managing their installation and removal. Software does not have to be commercial to be classed as a package, nor is there a minimum size or minimum number of files needed. If you have a collection of scripts that you would like to have on all your servers, it would make a lot of sense to create a package from them and install it on each server. You may feel there's not much point going to the trouble, especially if there are only a few scripts involved, but if you do this you can be sure you have a consistent set of scripts on each server. You can then also keep track of the version of the package on each server and as the scripts change you can easily manage their updating across all the servers.
