FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) –
A term that refers to an online document that poses a series of common questions and answers on a specific topic.
Ferroresonant transformer –
A transformer that regulates the output voltage by the principle of ferroresonance. This occurs when an iron-core inductor is part of an LC circuit and it is driven into saturation, causing its inductive reactance to increase to equal the capacitive reactance of the circuit.
Finger –
A standard protocol. A program implementing this protocol lists who is currently logged in on another host. It is a computer command that displays information about people using a particular computer, such as their names and their identification numbers. (Integrated finger is a common Unix network function that reports information relating to a user after entering his or her e-mail address.)
Firewall –
Hardware and/or software that sit between two networks, such as an internal network and an Internet service provider. It protects the network by refusing access by unauthorized users. It can even block messages to specific recipients outside the network.
Firmware –
Software which is constantly called upon by a computer so it is stored in semi-permanent memory called PROM (Programmable Read Only Memory) or EPROM (Electrical PROM) where it cannot be “forgotten” when the power is shut off. It is used in conjunction with hardware and software and shares the characteristics of both.
FPU (Floating Point Unit) –
A formal term for the math coprocessors found in many computers. The modern computer has the FPU integrated with the CPU.
Frames –
A programming device that divides web pages into multiple, scrollable regions; this is done by building each section of a web page as a separate HTML file and having one master HTML file identify all of the sections.
Frame Relay –
A packet-switching protocol for connecting devices on a Wide Area Network (WAN). Frame Relay supports data transfer rates at T-1 (1.544 Mbps) and T-3 (45 Mbps) speeds.

F-Secure SSH –
Provides for secure UNIX shell logins. SSH creates encrypted connections that protect confidential information, such as passwords, from exposure to network eavesdroppers.
FSP –
See Fulfillment Service Provider.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol and File Transfer Program) –
Allows users to quickly transfer files to and from a distant or local computer, list directors, delete and rename files on the distant computer. FTP the program is a MS-DOS program that enables transfers over the Internet between two computers.
Fulfillment Service Provider (FSP) –
A third-party business that outsources its warehousing and distribution services and expertise to other companies such as e-commerce websites.
