Summary

This chapter detailed several IBGP-related configuration tasks that represent JNCIP-level lab assignments. You should now be comfortable with the configuration and verification of full mesh, route reflection, and confederation applications of the BGP protocol, and you should be able to use routing policy to effect route redistribution and to adjust IBGP attributes such as local preference and community strings. Because IBGP peering is almost always implemented between router loopback addresses, you must be able to effectively use the local-address option, and make use of the multihop keyword as needed on C-BGP links to support lo0-based peering. This chapter also provided an IBGP load-balancing example that made use of the multipath option to permit the installation of multiple IGP forwarding next hops when presented with otherwise equal IBGP updates for the same prefix from two or more IBGP speakers.

A successful JNCIP exam candidate must be proficient with all things IBGP, because the operation of EBGP, and the overall effectiveness of your BGP-related policy, will depend in large part on the successful deployment of a functional IBGP infrastructure.
