Zhuhai registered an impressive increase of 75.02 per cent in its use of foreign direct investment in 2000. Contracted investment was worth US$554.9 million and 554 FDI contracts were approved (see Table 7.45.4).

FDI came from 25 countries and regions in 2000, 10 more than in the previous year. Investment came mainly from Hong Kong, the USA and Macao. There were 167 Hong Kong-invested projects with a contractual investment of US$198 million, 36.4 per cent of the total for the city. The USA and Macao also invested significant amounts. Investment came from Greece, Belize and Bermuda for the first time in 2000. 343 of these projects were production- related and 211 non-production orientated. 325 projects were in the manufacturing industry, with a total amount of contract value of US$407 million, or 74.68 per cent of the total foreign direct investment. Of the 211 non-production projects, 165 were in the service industry, with a contracted investment of US$83.70, or 15.36 per cent of the total. There were 85 projects in computer applications and services, with a contractual value amounting to US$25.01 million.
