In 2000, the import and export value of Lianyungang totalled US$485.10 million, an increase of 16 per cent over US$418.72 million in 1999. Total export value was US$388.31 million, up by 21 per cent over US$320.52 million in 1999. Export was equivalent to 10.97 per cent of the city's GDP of RMB29.3 billion (US$3.540 billion).
Export of primary and manufactured products amounted to US$110 million and US$278.31 million respectively, or 28 per cent and 72 per cent of the total export value.
Export commodities went to more than 100 countries and regions in the world. Japan was the largest buyer of the city's exports (see Table 7.36.2).

Import value fell by 1 per cent from US$98.20 million in 1999 to US$96.08 million in 2000. Total import value of primary and manufactured products was 23 per cent and 77 per cent respectively, or US$22.42 million and US$74.38 million.
Japan ranked first among the top five import markets, with sales of US$36.69 million in 2000. See Table 7.36.3.
