Fujian Province is situated on the south- eastern coast of China, facing Taiwan across the Taiwan Straits. Hills and rolling land account for 80 per cent of the province's territory. Along its 3,324 kilometre coastline are river estuaries, most of which form good natural harbours. It has a total area of 136,000 square kilometres and a population of 34.40 million. The provincial capital is Fuzhou. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.13.1.
