The region is a long and narrow strip of land running from the north-east to the south-west along China's northern frontier and bordering on Mongolia and Russia in the north. It is comprised largely of a plateau some 1,000 metres above sea level. The total area is 1,183,000 square kilometres and the population is 22.32 million. The regional capital is Hohhot.
