Situated in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, on a plateau, Shanxi province is landlocked and borders on the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the north and Henan Province in the south. Most of the area is more than 1,000 metres above sea level. Highlands and mountains in the eastern and western parts of the province account for almost three- quarters of the province's total area of 156,300 square kilometres and has a population of 32.72 million. The provincial capital is Taiyuan. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.4.1.
