Beijing, capital of the People's Republic of China, is situated in the northern part of the North China Plain and is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. It is one of the four municipalities “ the others being Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing “ which are directly under the jurisdiction of the Central Government and have autonomy in economic, financial and administrative decisions. This ancient city has grown into one of the biggest industrial and commercial centres in the nation, covering an area of 16,808 square kilometres with a population of 13.8 million.
