Import and export trade

In 2000, the import volume of rubber continued to increase considerably from 1.08 million tons to 1.562 million tons, a 44 per cent increase on the previous year. Foreign exchange used for imports increased by 49 per cent, from US$0.88 billion the previous year to US$1.306 billion. Of the total, the import volume of synthetic rubber increased by 8.9 per cent, from 650,000 tons in 1999 to 710,000 tons in 2000, and the foreign exchange used grew by 20 per cent, from US$602 million to US$722 million. Import volume, of IIR, NBR and EPR all increased by over 30 per cent.

In 2000, the export volume of synthetic rubber was 64,000 tons, 8 per cent of the total output and an increase of 41.8 per cent on the previous year. Of this, BR accounted for 36,700 tons, SBR 14,800 tons and others 7,900 tons, all significant increases on 1999.

In 2000, synthetic rubbers were mainly imported from Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Russia; these constituting 77 per cent of the total.

The pattern of import trade changed considerably in 2000. The processing trade based on imported materials or on materials provided by customers still dominated, accounting for 54 per cent of the total trade; general trade volume surged from 89,000 tons in 1998 and 202,000 tons in 1999 up to 242,000 tons in 2000, a 20 per cent increase on the previous year and making up 34 per cent of the total import volume.
