Exchanging and acquiring components

A major change in Flash MX 2004 was the addition of a whole new set of components, known as V2 components, and the architecture that they use. Flash 8 continues to offer the same variety of components, with some modifications to solve minor bugs present in the Flash MX 2004 versions. Components offer an easy way to reuse complicated elements within your movie without having to build them on your own. Although it's beyond the scope of this chapter, you can also build your own custom components. In this chapter, we take a look at what components are, their parameters, and how to work with many of the components included with Flash 8.

Flash Basic 8 ships with 14 User Interface components, and doesn't feature any other component sets. Flash Professional 8, however, has 22 User Interface components, 6 Data components, and several components related to Flash Video playback and control.

New Feature

The new FLVPlayback component enables you to play Flash Video files (.flv) with extreme ease. This component is only included with Flash Professional 8, and we discuss it at length in Chapter 17, "Displaying Video."

Cross-Reference

This chapter discusses User Interface (UI) components. For more discussion of the Data components in Flash Pro 8, read Chapter 34, "Binding Data and Events to Components."
