For Dr. Hans Gerdes and Dr. Yuman Fong of Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and for clinicians
everywhere working to cure cancer
one patient at a time

Acknowledgments

It is not an exaggeration to say that without Dr. Hans Gerdes, I might not be here. I have a genetic predisposition to a number of cancers that have kept me working with Dr. Gerdes for many years. Like all doctors at major cancer centers such as Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Dr. Gerdes has access to all sorts of technology that is useful when treating a difficult case such as mine. The technology is useful, but not sufficient. Dr. Gerdes listens to me, understanding my feelings and needs, and helps me to interpret the findings that the technology provides. On two occasions, Dr. Gerdes has referred me to Dr. Yuman Fong, who is a surgeon. I am happy to say that after two surgeries, I not only trust, but genuinely like, Dr. Fong. To both of these fine doctors, "thanks" seems inadequate.

Writing a book is really a team project, even when only one author's name is on the cover. On this project, I have been really fortunate to work with project editor Kristine Haugseth, copy editor Crystal Thomas, and technical editor Kenn Scribner. Kenn especially has taught me quite a bit about how to craft a great technical book. On more than one occasion, these folks saved me from myself. On a number of other occasions they tried, but I insisted on having things my way. Thus, where the book succeeds, it is almost certainly because of Kristine, Crystal, and Kenn. Where it fails, it is clearly due to me alone.

My family Erin, Tim, and my wife, Jean tell me I have been a little cranky while working on this book. I find that hard to believe, but I will take it from them. They have allowed me the freedom on many occasions to follow my dreams, and they continue to do so, even when it hurts. Special thanks to Jean. There is little doubt that when I married her, I married up!

About the Author

Ever since he convinced his wife to spend what seemed like far too much money on an Atari 800, Douglas J. Reilly has loved playing with computers. For many years before that, he made a living repairing photocopiers and early personal computers. After a while, the software seemed more fun to him than the hardware.

Doug is the owner of Access Microsystems Inc., a small consulting firm that develops software using Microsoft Visual C++, Borland Delphi, and of course, the Microsoft .NET Framework with C# and Microsoft Visual Basic .NET. He has created applications to test job applicants electronically, track retailers' inventory, and repair damaged databases. Currently, he is working on a variety of applications for the health care industry and for other organizations. In addition to developing software, Doug has written articles published in Dr. Dobb's Journal and Software Development. He writes a weblog for Mobilized Software (http://MobilizedSoftware.com), and he writes the Database Geek of the Week series of articles for Simple Talk (http://www.Simple-Talk.com). Doug also wrote the book Designing Microsoft ASP.NET Applications (Microsoft Press, 2002).

Doug lives with his wife, Jean, and one of his two children, Erin. His son, Tim, is a pharmacist out on his own. When not programming, Doug enjoys music, reading, and bicycle riding. Even while writing this book, he managed to get in almost 1,400 miles of bike riding during the summer of 2005.

Doug can be reached by e-mail at doug@ProgrammingASP.NET.
