Section 71. Tweak Address Book Options

71. Tweak Address Book Options

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

68 Create and Manage Contacts

The Address Book application includes a few options that give you control over how contacts are displayed and manipulated. For example, the options made available by the Address Book application allow you to do away with the delete confirmation prompt that appears whenever you delete a contact. Although doing away with this prompt can be a timesaver, it does make it easier to accidentally delete contacts. Another option determines the order in which the contacts are displayed in the contact list. In addition to providing access to option settings, the Address Book application provides a quick and easy way to determine how many contacts you have stored away on your device.

71. Tweak Address Book Options

1.
Launch the Address Book Application

On the Home screen, scroll to the Address Book icon and click the trackwheel. The Address Book application is launched and displayed on the screen.

2.
Open the Address Book Options Screen

Click the trackwheel and select Options from the menu that appears. Click once more to open the Address Book Options screen.

3.
Configure Address Book Options

The Address Book Options screen includes several options that control how contacts are displayed and interacted with in the contact list. The first option, Sort By , determines how the contacts are sorted in the contacts list. You can set this option to one of the following values: First Name, Last Name , or Company . Not only does the Sort By option determine the order of the contacts, but it also determines what piece of information is displayed first for a contact. As an example, if you select Company for this option, each contact is listed with her company name first, followed by her last and first names . Although First Name is the default value for the Sort By option, I find Last Name to be the most useful setting for sorting contacts.

The Confirm Delete option on the Address Book Options screen controls whether you are prompted to confirm the deletion of a contact. The default value of this setting is Yes , which requires you to agree to a prompt before deleting a contact. Unless you don't mind the risk of accidentally deleting a contact, I recommend keeping the default setting.

The Allow Duplicate Names option determines whether the address book allows more than one instance of the exact same name (first and last name). The default setting is Yes , which allows you to have duplicate names.

The last field in the address book options, Number of Entries , isn't an option but instead provides you with the total number of contacts on your device. This information might or might not be helpful to you, but at the very least it can let you know how many people you care about regularly coming into contact with electronically .

4.
Exit and Save Changes

When you finish configuring address book options, press the Escape button. If you made changes to any of the options, you are prompted to save. Click Save to keep the changes or click Discard to ignore the changes.
