If you've ever run into problems dialing a phone number that requires you to specify an extension, you'll want to take a look at smart dialing on your BlackBerry device. Smart dialing is a feature that allows you to specify exact dialing parameters such as your country code prefix, area code, and national number length, as well as how long to wait when dialing an office phone extension. In fact, you can specify a different wait time for dialing extensions in your own office as compared to other offices. Smart dialing is a feature that can serve you just fine if you cruise along with the default settings. Or you could find it critical to alter the smart dialing settings to suit your own unique calling needs.

59. Take Advantage of Smart Dialing

1.
Open the Phone Screen

Scroll to the Phone icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Phone screen appears, displaying a dialing area and a list of recently made and received phone calls.

TIP

You can quickly jump to the Phone screen from any location on your phone by simply pressing the Send key.

2.
Open the Phone Options Screen

Click the trackwheel to open the Phone menu, select Options from the menu, and click again. The Phone Options screen appears and provides access to a variety of phone options.

3.
Configure Smart Dialing Options

To configure smart dialing options, select Smart Dialing on the Phone Options screen and click the trackwheel. The Smart Dialing screen appears and provides access to the various settings associated with the smart dialing feature.

The first block of smart dialing options allows you to tweak general dialing settings for your device, including your originating Country Code, Area Code , and National Number Length . Your wireless service provider has likely already provided correct default settings for these options, but you are certainly allowed to change them if your dialing specifics have changed.

NOTE

The national number length is a count of the characters in a full phone number (including area code) in your country, excluding the country code. As an example, the U.S. national number length is 10, which consists of a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit number. Here's an example of a 10-digit number, just to make things clear: 615-555-1234.

The last two blocks of options on the Smart Dialing screen determine how extensions are dialed when you make a call to an office phone number with an extension. More specifically , you can specify a single phone number in the Number field that has a unique wait time and extension length; this setting depends entirely on your specific office phone system. To specify these unique settings, enter the main number and then choose a wait setting for the Wait For option, as well as an extension length for the Extension Length option. Most office phone systems use extensions with 24 digits, but the Extension Length option allows you to specify an extension length up to 6 digits.

TIP

To enter an extension when dialing a phone number, enter the number and then press the Z X key followed by the extension. The main number is dialed; when the call is connected, your BlackBerry device waits for a specified amount of time and then dials the extension; this amount of time is determined by the Wait For setting on the Smart Dialing screen.

The settings you enter for the second block of options on the Smart Dialing screen apply to the single office number you specified in the Number field.

All extensions you dial for other numbers are subject to a general wait time that is specified in the second Wait For field. Unless you have problems dialing extensions, the default setting of 2 seconds is probably sufficient.

After tweaking the smart dialing options, press the Escape button to return to the Phone Options screen. If you've made changes, a confirmation pop-up window appearsselect Save to confirm the changes and then click the trackwheel.

4.
Exit Phone Options

Press the Escape button to exit the Phone Options screen. Press the Escape button again to navigate back to the Home screen, or just press the End key.
