Although the address book makes dialing a phone number fairly easy, for the utmost in dialing efficiency you should consider using the speed dial list. The speed dial list is a list of phone numbers mapped to the number keys on the BlackBerry keyboard. To dial a speed dial number, you simply hold down the appropriate number key. Fortunately, there is a highly intuitive user interface for assigning numbers to the speed dial list and shuffling the numbers around to get the assignments just like you want them. You'll likely find yourself relying heavily on the speed dial list to dial common numbers after you get the hang of how to set up and manage it.

NOTE

By default, your voice mail number is initially assigned to the 1 key, although you are free to move this voice mail number to a different speed dial number if you want.

1.
Open the Phone Screen

Scroll to the Phone icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Phone screen appears, displaying a dialing area and a list of recently made and received phone calls.

TIP

You can quickly jump to the Phone screen from any location on your phone by simply pressing the Send key.

2.
Open the Speed Dial List

To access the speed dial list, click the trackwheel and select View Speed Dial List from the menu that appears. Click again to open the speed dial list, which shows all the assignments for the number keys ( 1 9 ) on your device's keyboard.

3.
Add or Edit a Speed Dial Number

To add a speed dial number, scroll the trackwheel to select the key to which you want to add the number and click. Select New Speed Dial from the menu that appears, and click once more. You are immediately taken to the address book, where you can select the contact for the speed dial numberjust select the contact, click the trackwheel, and select Add Speed Dial To Contact Name from the menu that appears. Click once more, and the contact's number is added to the speed dial list as the specified speed dial number.

NOTE

If the selected contact has more than one phone number when editing a speed dial number, you are prompted to select which number you want to use as the speed dial number. Just scroll to select the number and click the trackwheel.

TIP

If you want to enter a number directly as a speed dial number, as opposed to selecting a contact, scroll to the top of the address book and select [Use Once] in the contact list. Click the trackwheel, and then select Phone from the menu that appears. Click once more, and you'll be given an opportunity to enter the number. Click Continue on the menu that appears, and the number is added as the speed dial number.

If you want to change an existing speed dial number, scroll the trackwheel to select the number, click, and then select Edit from the menu that appears. Click again to select a new number for the speed dial key. The process for selecting a new number when editing a speed dial entry is the same as initially adding a new speed dial number.

TIP

You can add a speed dial number directly from the call log list in the Phone application by selecting a number in the list, clicking the trackwheel, and selecting Add Speed Dial from the menu that appears. Click once more and confirm the number before assigning it to a speed dial key. See 60 Work with Call Logs to find out more about call logs.

4.
Move a Speed Dial Number

If you decide you aren't happy with the assignment of a speed dial number, you can easily move the numbers around so they are assigned to different keys. To move a speed dial number, scroll the trackwheel to select the number, click, and select Move from the menu that appears. Click once more and the number is highlighted to indicate that it can be moved by scrolling the trackwheel. When you settle on a new location for the number, click the trackwheel, and the number is moved. If there is already a number in the new location, you are prompted to replace the number or cancel the move; you can't swap numbers on the speed dial list.

5.
Delete a Speed Dial Number

Just as you can add new speed dial numbers and edit existing numbers, you can also delete existing numbers, which simply means you're clearing the speed dial key so it doesn't dial any number. To delete the selected speed dial number, click the trackwheel, select Delete from the menu that appears, and click again. You are prompted to confirm the deletion of the speed dial number; click Delete to continue with the deletion or Cancel if you've changed your mind.

NOTE

Deleting a speed dial number removes the number assignment only from the specified speed dial key. The associated contact in the address book is completely unaffected by the speed dial deletion.

6.
Exit the Speed Dial List

Press the Escape button to exit the speed dial list. Press the Escape button again to navigate back to the Home screen, or just press the End key.
