7. Choose a Theme

You might be familiar with themes from your desktop computer, where they impact the background wallpaper, icons, font family, font size , and color scheme of your daily work. Themes play a similar role on the BlackBerry 7100 series devices. In fact, in some ways, themes are even more important on BlackBerry devices than on desktop computers because the user interface is compacted into such a small space. For example, icons largely define the Home screen, which means a theme change dramatically affects the appearance of all the major services. Although the default theme on your device will certainly suffice, it's worth experimenting with a few themes to find one you really like. Everyone has his own tastes, and there's a good chance you'll find a theme that suits your style better than the default.

KEY TERM

Theme A set of images, icons, fonts, and colors that determines the visual look and feel of the BlackBerry user interface. A BlackBerry theme is similar to a theme on a desktop computer.

NOTE

For consistency, this book uses the standard T-Mobile theme throughout, which features a retro look for icons. Other wireless carriers typically provide their own themes, which can vary considerably from the T-Mobile theme.

1.
Open the Tools Screen

Scroll to the Tools icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Tools screen opens.

2.
Open the Options Screen

Scroll to the Options icon and click the trackwheel. A list of options for which you can change the settings appears.

NOTE

Depending on your specific 7100 device, the Options screen might be named Settings instead.

3.
Open the Theme Screen

Scroll to the Theme option in the list and click the trackwheel. The Theme screen opens.

4.
Select and Activate a Theme

Scroll the trackwheel to select a theme and then click. From the menu that appears, click Activate to activate the selected theme.

5.
View the New Theme

The theme is now activated and visible, but to really see its true effect, you must press the End key to return to the Home screen.

NOTE

There is no guarantee that your device comes configured with more than one theme. However, you can download and install additional themes. See 22 Install a New Theme .

In the example shown here, you can see the difference a theme change makes to the appearance of the Home screen. Step 1 shows the T-Mobile theme that is initially set on devices offered by T-Mobile, while this step shows the Home screen again but this time with the Default theme that is also available on most devices.
