This lesson takes about 1 hour to complete.

Goals

Learn how to set up Windows accounts

Set up security policies for Windows accounts

Configure Windows file services on Mac OS X Server

Set up a Windows share point Create a Windows computer list

Account management is not confined to Mac OS X accounts. Mac OS X Server can also host Windows accounts and home folders. While full manageability does not compare equally between the two types of accounts, a reasonable user experience for Windows users can remove the need for a Windows server in some situations. To provide home folders for Windows users, Mac OS X Server must be able to share folders (and/or volumes) over the default Windows sharing protocol, Server Message Block (SMB). Both Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server include Samba, the open-source alternative to Windows Server Message Block. This enables Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server to offer share points to Windows users. Before a share point can be accessed, authentication must take place. Mac OS X Server can authenticate users with various methods, including popular Windows methods such as NTLMv1, NTLMv2, Kerberos, and even LAN Manager for older Windows 95 clients. In this lesson, you will learn how to set up and manage Windows accounts, Windows share points, and Windows computer lists.
