For system administrators, it would be ideal to simply deploy Mac OS X to the variety of computers you support and expect that everything will work every time, all the time, forever. Because this is not the case, you need to consider the lifecycle of your deployment.

The lifecycle begins with planning, where you envision what your finished deployment will look like. You go through the trial and error of designing what you hope will be the most functional method of installing, updating, upgrading, and maintaining your operating systems, applications, and files. Next, take some time to test out a few of your ideas in a way that won't impact your current implementation or create any permanent changes. After modifying your plan to reflect any discoveries, move to the implementation or deployment phase. Much of this phase has already been covered in previous lessons. Finally, step back and evaluate whether the plan was successful or not. Look at how you will maintain your implementation over a long period of time. The lessons learned during your implementation need to be captured, incorporated into a revised plan, and used to improve the next iteration.

This lesson focuses on some of the tools you can incorporate into your lifecycle planning to maintain the system of images and packages that you have already deployed.
