Managing Print Jobs

One of the primary reasons to configure a print server is that doing so gives administrators greater control over print jobs. The Server Admin tool in Mac OS X Server lets you monitor every print job that is sent through your print queues. Further, you can hold or delete print jobs waiting in the queue, thus allowing other jobs to print sooner.

To manage print jobs:

1.

Launch the Server Admin tool from /Applications/Server, and authenticate as an administrator (Figure 7.40).

2.

Select the Print service, and then click the Queues tab at the bottom of the window.

The Queues frame appears. It shows all your active print queues and the number of jobs in each queue (Figure 7.41). Notice in the figure that the selected queue is stopped.

3.

Do either of the following:

  • To stop all the jobs in a print queue, select the queue and click the Stop button .

  • Click the Start button to resume the print queue.

4.

Click the Jobs tab .

The Jobs frame appears. It shows all the active print jobs for a specific queue (Figure 7.42). Notice that the selected job is on hold.

5.

Select the queue you want to view or manage from the Jobs on Queue pop-up menu (Figure 7.43).

6.

Do any of the following:

  • To hold a print job, thus letting other jobs in the queue print sooner, select the job and click the Pause button .

  • Select a job and click the Start button to put the print job back on normal print status.

  • Select a job and click the Delete button to delete the job from the print queue.

Tips

  • Although the Server Admin tool automatically refreshes, it may not refresh often enough for you to see all the jobs. This is the case because the print server is so fast that it may receive and send the print job in less time than it takes for the Server Admin tool to display the job in the list.

  • In the Queues list shown in Figure 7.41, you'll notice the acronym PAP in the Shared Via column. Printer Access Protocol (PAP) is the part of AppleTalk that is responsible for printing.

  • Click the Refresh button to force the Server Admin tool to refresh the print queue or print job list immediately.
