When you install Mac OS X Server, the installer automatically installs a package called ServerAdministrationSoftware.pkg. Within this package are all the tools needed to manage Mac OS X Server. This package can be installed later on any Mac OS X client machine, allowing remote management of your server. Some of these tools can only be run from the command line. Some only work with the Xserve and the Xserve RAID. Some are only important if you're moving from an older server version, such as AppleShare IP or Mac OS X Server 1.2. Of all the tools, two of themServer Admin and Workgroup Managerare used to manage almost all aspects of Mac OS X Server. Additional applications found on both Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server fall under the category of server management, and this chapter will briefly look at these applications as well. This chapter also covers a variety of ways to update the software on your server. |
