  • Since so many members of today's workforce are mobile, there is a crticial need for remote applications that are flexible and easy to deploy. This chapter examines a voice-only application used by mobile sales workers via their existing cell phones. The solution utilizes the newly released Microsoft Speech SDK (SASDK). This SDK allows for two types of Web-based applications, voice-only, or telephony, and multi-modal (discussed in the next chapter).

  • For the sample application, the startup page, Login.aspx is responsible for getting the user's name, verifying the user's password, and redirecting the user to the MainMenu.aspx page. From here the user is asked which one of two functions is desired: (1) Get Product Info, or (2) Get Opportunities.

  • As prompts are recorded or imported, the Speech Engine automatically matches the text for each prompt with what was spoken. This process is known as alignment. Although the Speech Engine does a good job of aligning prompts, the developer has the option of adjusting these values with the Wave Editor.

  • There are many opportunities for voice-only applications in today's society. These types of applications will lower the barriers between human and computer interaction. They will also provide cost-efficient alternatives to traditional information-retrieval methods. The problems that once plagued these applications are being removed, and development is eased with tools like the Microsoft Speech SDK.
