Summary

Although SQL Server provides excellent tools and models to automate and implement backup and recovery, it is still up to the database administrator to determine the appropriate approach, and to build, document, and test a robust recovery plan. Backup and recovery is a key part of any database project, and should be considered at all stages of development. Periodic reviews of your recovery plan must also be undertaken to make sure it has kept up with the needs of your organization, and the size of the database.

Consideration must be given to data loss prevention as well. By implementing physical security, redundant hardware, and application checks and balances , you can reduce the chances of ever having to recover data. Bear in mind that these measures complement, but never replace, your backup plan.
