Summary

This chapter gives you a look at the most important parts of the replication tools, but there is much more to them. If the tools seem complex, remember that database replication is complex technology. We recognized that you may need assistance in various places, so we made sure to have a Help button in most wizard pages and dialog boxes.

Significant effort went into making the tools for configuring and monitoring replication in SQL Server 2005 as intuitive and easy to use as possible. We were successful in many ways: Compared to the wizard in SQL Server 2000, the New Publication Wizard has about 50% fewer pages. SQL Server 2000 had two subscription wizards: separate ones for creating push and pull subscriptions. The New Subscription Wizard in SQL Server 2005 combines both into one common experience. Replication Monitor was completely redesigned and focuses more on your replicated data and less on the moving parts of the implementation. Your can debate whether the replication tools qualify as easy, but there is no doubt that completing replication tasks is easier now than in previous versions of SQL Server.
