Summary

 < Free Open Study >

You've now seen how to install the J2SDK from Sun Microsystems. This has taught you three things. First, you've obviously learned how to install a JDK, allowing you to develop Java software (if that's your cup of tea). Second, you've learned in a more general sense how to configure a software "suite" similar to the J2SDK; this essentially boils down to managing environment variables and software installations. Third, you've also learned how to apply techniques you already knew to solve a new problem. I'm specifically talking about how the /opt/java directory helps you manage your Java software installations by mimicking the standard /opt directory, with which you were already acquainted.

Hopefully you're now starting to see how all these small tricks and techniques that this book has been discussing come together to help you solve actual problems. Now armed with knowledge of a variety of software installations, you should be able to apply these little tricks and techniques to any new problem you come across—just as you applied and tailored the principles of /opt for the new /opt/java directory. This chapter concludes Part Three of this book, which is about installing software. Part Four will discuss several case studies of real-world Linux systems. Part Four will draw on the material in the other parts, and especially on Part Three. If you've finished reading this entire part (from Chapter 7 to this chapter), congratulations—you're now ready to see some actual case studies!
