Summary

This chapter discussed a development workstation. The system exists on a large corporate network, and so it must be configured to behave properly on that network, according to the policies of the network administrators. Once the system basic system is configured, the development environment can be configured. This environment varies by need, but for this case study it involved a suite of Java software and related development tools.

If you've read this entire chapter, you've actually gained two separate skills. First is the ability to configure a system on a corporate network. This process isn't related in any way to a software development workstation and can be applied to any system (server or workstation) that needs to be connected to the network. The second area is, of course, the configuration of a Java environment.

Now that you've finished the second case study, you should be able to compare two distinct installations: the home desktop from Chapter 14 and the corporate workstation from this chapter. The differences and insights you've gained should help you customize your system for any environment you run into. The next chapter is a case study of a network firewall, which will give you a third, very distinctive insight into the customization of a Linux system.
