Best Practices

  • Take future expansion and relevance of hardware into account when sizing servers for MOM deployment.

  • Use a Microsoft SQL Server database for MOM instead of the MSDE Database.

  • Keep the installation of MOM on a separate server or set of separate dedicated member servers that do not run any other separate applications.

  • Use WINS in environments that utilize Windows NT nodes.

  • Use SQL Server Reporting Services to produce custom reports using MOM's reporting feature.

  • Use Microsoft Outlook 98 or higher to use email notifications.

  • Start with a single configuration group and add on additional configuration groups only if they are absolutely necessary.

  • Use a dedicated service account for MOM.

  • Use a database volume of at least 5GB depending on the length of time needed to store events.

  • Monitor the size of the MOM database to ensure that it does not increase beyond the bounds of acceptable size.

  • Archive collected data.

  • Modify the grooming interval to aggressively address space limitations and keep the database consistent.

  • Configure MOM to monitor itself.
