What Is Microsoft Operations Manager?

Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) provides an excellent approach to monitoring and managing Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000based network environments. MOM helps to identify problems before they evolve into critical issues through the use of MOM's event consolidation, performance monitoring, and alerting features. MOM provides a real-time view of critical events and intelligently links them to appropriate Microsoft Knowledge Base articles. Cryptic event IDs are directly matched to known issues and immediately referred to technical reference articles in Microsoft's Knowledge Base for troubleshooting and problem resolution. MOM monitors Windows-based servers and applications using standard Windows services such as Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) and Windows logged events. In addition, MOM also provides a reporting feature that allows network administrators to track problems and trends occurring on their network. Reports can be generated automatically, providing network administrators a quick, real-time view of their server performance data.

Note

Microsoft Operations Manager was originally developed by NetIQ, and then was purchased and released as MOM 2000. MOM was subsequently updated and released as MOM 2005. Both versions contain powerful management capabilities, with MOM 2005 providing additional functionality and scalability. It is recommended to deploy the latest version when possible, to take advantage of the additional features and enhanced performance.

MOM integrates with and manages Windows Server 2003. It can also be used in Windows 2000 Server or mixed environments to provide for automated monitoring of vital network functionality. This type of functionality is instrumental in reducing downtime and getting the most out of a Windows Server 2003 investment. In a nutshell, MOM is an effective way to gain proactive, rather than reactive, control over a mixed Windows Server 2003/Windows 2000 environment.

This chapter focuses on defining MOM as a service in a Windows Server 2003 network. It provides specific analysis of how MOM operates and presents MOM design best practices. In addition, this chapter presents sample Windows Server 2003 designs to give a real-world approach to MOM functionality and usability.
