Using the Digital Inputs to Record a Track

 <  Day Day Up  >

The VS-1680 allows you to record a true digital source through its digital inputs. This source can be a CD player, DAT machine, another VS recorder, or any other digital source. You have the choice of using the coaxial or optical inputs. There are basically three steps to using the digital inputs:

1.
Make your connections. Connect the digital outputs of your digital source to the appropriate digital inputs on the VS-1680.

2.
Match the sample rates. The sample rate of the song and the sample rate of the digital source must be the same before the VS-1680 can record the signal. The sample rate for your song is set when you perform the New Song function described earlier in this chapter. If that sample rate does not match your digital source, you can create a new song with the correct sample rate to match the digital source.

3.
Set the Master Clock. The VS-1680's internal clock must be synchronized with the digital signal from the digital source before the VS-1680 can record the data.

To set the Master Clock, do the following:

1.
Hold SHIFT F5 (SYSTEM) F1 (SYSPM).

2.
Use the cursor keys to move the cursor to MasterClk.

3.
Use the jogwheel to select either DIGIN1 or DIGIN2, depending on whether you are using the coaxial or optical inputs. Digital In Lock should appear in the VS screen.

4.
Press PLAY/DISPLAY to exit.

The last thing you'll need to do before recording the digital signal is route the digital input to the desired recording track. If you are trying to record the digital signal to track 1, do the following:

1.
Press and hold the STATUS button for track 1. You will probably see track 1's INPUT SELECT button start to flash, because that is the default setting on a new song.

2.
While holding down the STATUS button for track 1, press the INPUT SELECT button for track 1 until it stops flashing.

3.
While still holding down the STATUS button for track 1, press the DIGITAL SELECT button on the right side of the channel 8 INPUT button. The DIGITAL SELECT button should be flashing now.

You may now record the digital source to track 1 by pressing REC and PLAY. Many SP/DIF digital sources are two channels of digital audio, a left and right or stereo signal. Linked tracks will record both of the incoming digital signals in stereo.
