Viewing Your Project

 <  Day Day Up  >

The VS-2480 provides many different ways to view the parameters of your project.

Home Screen View

The Home screen, shown in Figure 15.5, is your all-around display area. Press the HOME button next to the F6 button under the LCD display, or click on the HOME button in the top right of the VGA display, to access the Home screen.

The Home screen is divided into several distinct areas.

The Time/Transport display area, shown in Figure 15.6, shows actual project time in several different formats and has clickable buttons to emulate the physical Transport Control buttons .

A lot of control is packed into the project information area, as shown in Figure 15.7. Left to right on the top row are the Mastering mode controls (On/Off, Play/Record), the Phrase Pad mode controls (On/Off, Play/Record, Undo/Redo), the Automix controls (On/Off, Play/Record, Undo/Redo, Snapshot), and the main editing controls (Undo/Redo).

On the second row we find the external SYNC On/Off control, the metronome control (Off/ Internal/MIDI), Auto Punch and loop On/Off Controls, and project information.

Previous and next controls (Transport), marker controls, and buttons providing access to locator and scene dialogs are found on the third row.

The Fader display area actually displays the values of the knobs associated with the currently selected bank of faders . These could be pan settings, AUX send settings, or dynamics/EQ settings, as determined by a few buttons on the VS-2480. Pressing the button immediately to the right of the row of knobs will allow the knobs to function as dynamics/EQ controls. The control button glows red in this mode. If the Global Knob/Fader Assign switch is set to Knobs, these knobs may also represent the AUX 1-8 send levels when the KNOB/FADER ASSIGN button is illuminated.

To the right of the Fader display area are the input clip indicators. These warn you of overloaded input channels.

The Playlist area, shown in Figure 15.8, shows all the phrases on the currently selected V-Tracks. The vertical red line in the Playlist area is the timeline, and it represents the current project time. From left to right, each track's number, V-Track selection, name , mute, solo, Automix, and phrase pad status are displayed, as is the overall channel status. You can change most of these parameters by clicking on the status indicators with the mouse.

You can zoom in on tracks or time regions by holding the SHIFT button and using the cursor keys to zoom in or out, both horizontally and vertically. Figure 15.9 shows the same timeline as Figure 15.8, but zoomed in horizontally to show more timing detail.

Zooming in on tracks makes it easier to edit them with a mouse. If you zoom in close enough, a visual representation of the audio data on the track will be displayed. Figure 15.10 shows two tracks zoomed in to the maximum magnification.

Figure 15.10. Zooming in vertically displays more information per track

Most of the track parameter representations in the Close Zoom mode actually work with the mouse. For example, you can adjust any of the eight AUX sends by dragging the appropriate slider.

Hold the SHIFT button and press the HOME button under the LCD display to toggle a display of V-Track/Locator/Scene information, as shown in Figure 15.11. You may also toggle this information by clicking on the horizontal black arrow between the track display area and the V-Track area on the VGA.

Hint: V-Track Selection

You can click on the small V-Track representation icons to select them with the mouse. After each selection, the VS-2480 displays a confirmation message. You cannot make any other changes while this message is displayed.

To speed selection of multiple V-Tracks, press the ENTER/YES button after making each selection to remove the V-Track confirmation message.

Mixer Views

You can choose to view the Input Mixer, Track Mixer, or current fader group on the VGA screen. Many of the visual representations of channel settings may be adjusted by clicking and dragging with the mouse. Access the mixer views via the MIXER menu or the function keys.
