TIP 86: Working with Elements and Attributes in the Outline Editor

It's easy to add attributes to elements correctly even if you don't remember the attribute names or proper syntax. Simply select the new attribute for the selected element from the pull-down menu in the Outline Editor (Figure 86a).

Controlled by DOCTYPE

The list of attributes available for a selected element is intelligently controlled by the current DOCTYPE (see Tip 65) of the page. This means that the list of available attributes for an element might be longer or shorter, depending on the current DOCTYPE. This is not only a great learning tool, but it also helps ensure better quality code.

It's just as easy to edit attributes in the Outline Editor as it is to add them. For example, the LONGDESC attribute can be used to add extended accessibility features to images, but there is no corresponding field in the Image Inspector when you use the Layout Editor. Outline mode makes it easy to add and edit attributes that are used less frequently and are not available in the Inspector (Figure 86b).
