TIP 202: Fixing Problems in the Errors Tab

If you use the site-management features in GoLive, it's unlikely that you'll see any errors in your site, but in the rare case you do, it's easy to fix them. If you see any bug icons in the Files tab of the Site window or errors in the Errors tab of the Site window, refresh the Site window first before you panic. It's possible that you inadvertently moved or renamed some files in your operating system that GoLive doesn't know about yet. If that doesn't solve the problem, open the Errors tab of the Site window and read on for how to fix various common problems.

  • Missing Files: Select the missing file error in the Site window and use the Point and Shoot tool in the Error Inspector to update the links to the correct file (Figure 202a). Confirm the warning dialog and you're done.

  • Orphan Files: Orphan files are files that GoLive can find on your hard drive but that are not located in your web-content folder. This means that unless you fix these errors, the orphan files will not be uploaded to the server and will cause errors for your visitors. To fix an orphan file error, drag it from the Errors tab to the Files tab in the Site window (Figure 202b). GoLive will copy the orphan file into the root folder and update all links throughout the site to the new location.

  • Filename Constraints: If there's a certain way you want to name all of the files and folders in a site, choose Site > Settings. Under Filename Constraints, click Site Specific Settings and select one of the presets (Figure 202c).

Now the Site window will warn you about file and folder names that violate this preference, but it won't automatically change filenames or prohibit you from creating new filenames that don't follow the rules. The feature warns you, but you have to fix the error. You can easily fix the error by selecting the file in the Errors tab and changing the filename in the File Inspector (Figure 202d).
