TIP 117: Using the CSS Tab in the Site Window

As the use of CSS becomes more common among Web designers, it becomes more important to manage all the external CSS files and the various CSS rules. GoLive CS2 introduces a groundbreaking new way to manage all these aspects of CSS usage in one centralized location: the new CSS tab in the Site window (Figure 117).

Keepin' It Fresh

If you've been doing some heavy CSS editing, make sure you click the Refresh button in the toolbar to ensure you're looking at the most current CSS style information.

Inside the new CSS tab you can see a centralized listing of all the external .css files and every Class and ID style that is defined or used in every page of the site. You might notice that Element styles are not listed, and that is because they are applied automatically and you don't have any control over them other than editing the rules in the CSS Editor.

You can even see how many times a style is defined and how many times it's been used throughout the pages of your site. This CSS inventory will help you avoid unnecessary duplicates and improve the efficiency of your styles.

If you need to make some changes to a CSS rule, select it in the CSS tab of the Site window and look in the Inspector palette to see where the rule is defined. Remember that it's possible for one style to be defined in multiple locations, but in most cases you'll have just one source location. Double-click the file where the style is defined to open it, and the selected rule is automatically selected in the source document. Now all you have to do is edit the CSS rule and save the file.
