The mobile phone is an excellent communication gadget that can be used anywhere, anytime. However, it also poses a great security threat, as indicated in Figure 38.5.

Consider a scenario in which a bomb is fitted with a Bluetooth device. The bomb is programmed to explode if it receives a small text message. A few meters away from the bomb, a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone is placed. From anywhere on the earth, another mobile phone can send a short message using the short messaging service (SMS) to the mobile phone located near the bomb. Over the Bluetooth link, this message is passed on to the electronics in the bomb, and the bomb is detonated. This example illustrates the dangers of technology and the need for surveillance to gather the necessary intelligence to stop such dangerous activities.
The mobile phone is a security threat due to its potential in making a remote controlled detonator through the short messaging service.
