Another type of mobile device is a hybrid Windows CE device and mobile phone. Unlike a Pocket PC device that has a touch screen display and looks more like a PDA than a telephone, the Smartphone is a mobile phone that has a Windows interface for viewing inbox messages, calendar appointments, contacts, and other Outlook information. As with Pocket PC devices, an organization can purchase a Smartphone and test the functionality, or it can download a Smartphone emulator and test the functionality of the Smartphone device to Exchange 2003. Using a Smartphone Wireless DeviceThere are several vendors that have adopted the Smartphone technology into their mobile phone device. The benefit to Exchange administrators is that a Smartphone by definition comes with mobile connectivity, so the device is Internet-ready from the time the device is powered on. Besides being able to use the phone as a mobile phone, a user can also access the Internet using the built-in Internet Explorer browser. If users have problems with Internet connectivity with a Smartphone, they contact the wireless phone carrier for support. The carrier typically has technical support that helps users connect the Smartphone to the Internet for general browsing. When they can browse the Internet, the Smartphone can be configured to access Exchange 2003 for synchronization of email, contacts, calendar appointments, and other Outlook information. Using a Smartphone EmulatorThe Smartphone 2003 emulator (the SDK) is a free download from Microsoft. Go to http://www.microsoft.com, search on the words Smartphone 2003 SDK , and download the Microsoft Smartphone 2003 SDK.msi file (55MB). In addition to downloading the Smartphone 2003 emulator, you also need to download a copy of the eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 and the eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 Service Pack 2 or higherunless you installed the eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 and Service Pack when you installed the Pocket PC 2003 SDK. The eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 and Service Pack should be installed before the SDK emulator to provide the core driver and libraries needed to run the software development kit. The eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 and Service Pack can be found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/device/embedded/download.aspx . The eVC4.exe is 333MB and the evc4sp2.exe (Service Pack 2) is 42MB. Requirements to Run the Smartphone 2003 EmulatorTo install eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0, Microsoft states its requirement is a system running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, 450MHz or faster Pentium-II class system, 128MB192MB or more of available memory, 200MB of available disk space, network adapter, VGA video, and a mouse. The host workstation also needs a network adapter connected to a network connection that will access the Exchange 2003 server. It is typically recommended to first test the Smartphone emulation on an internal backbone segment to make sure the connection to the Exchange server is not blocked by external firewalls, routers, or other external perimeter devices. The host workstation needs network connectivity, and although it's not a requirement to run the Smartphone emulator, the system should be able to connect to the Exchange server using Outlook Web Access or from an Outlook client. This ensures that the host workstation has the appropriate network connectivity for the emulator to connect to the server. NOTE The Smartphone 2003 emulator does not require its own IP address on the network, and there is no network connectivity configuration required on the emulator. The emulator simply passes through the existing LAN connection of the host workstation. If the workstation has connectivity to Exchange for Outlook or Outlook Web Access, that same connection is used by the emulator. Installing eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0After downloading the eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 and Smartphone 2003 SDK, install the two applications using the following steps:
After the base eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 has been installed, install eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 Service Pack 2 or higher using the following steps:
Installing the Smartphone 2003 EmulatorAfter the eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 and Service Pack have been installed, install the Smartphone 2003 SDK using the following steps:
Launching the Smartphone 2003 EmulatorAfter the Smartphone 2003 SDK has been installed, launch the emulator by selecting Start, Programs, Microsoft Smartphone 2003 SDK, and the Smartphone 2003 Emulator. By default, the Smartphone emulator establishes a link to the Internet as long as the host workstation that the emulator is installed on has Internet connectivity. Synchronizing Data Between the Smartphone and Exchange 2003A user's Outlook information can be synchronized between Exchange 2003 and a Smartphone device. The user can choose to synchronize email, calendar, and contact information. To synchronize information between the Pocket PC 2003 device and the Exchange 2003 server, use the following steps:
