If your computer is properly configured, or if your hosting site s server allows you to do so, you can send e-mail messages from your Microsoft ASP.NET Web applications. In this chapter, I ll explain how to set up your computer to allow you to send e-mail messages from ASP.NET Web applications, and we ll explore the basic technique for sending an e-mail message. Next I ll show you how to create an e-mail alert that is sent to you when an action occurs on your Web site. I ll also show you how to send pictures by adding them as attachments to an e-mail message. Incidentally, I m going to talk exclusively about sending e-mail. I m not going to talk about receiving e-mail, which is an entirely separate process best left to your e-mail provider.
Note | If you re going to deploy your Web pages to a hosting site, you need to find out whether the hosting site allows you to send e-mail messages from your Web pages. Not all hosting sites allow e-mail, even if they support ASP.NET. If your hosting site won t let you send e-mail messages using its site, you won t be able to apply the techniques described in this chapter to the Web pages you deploy to the hosting site. But you might still want to experiment with sending e-mail messages from Web pages that you re running on your local computer. |
Before you can start sending e-mail messages, you need to make sure that your computer is properly configured to allow you to send e-mail messages from your ASP.NET applications.
