Summary

Inception is the first phase identified in RUP. This is where you officially begin the project. During the Inception phase, you work with your customers and other stakeholders to agree about what problems you are trying to solve, what type of solution might be appropriate, and whether there is a business value in the solution. From those agreements, you develop an initial project plan with some cost and resource estimates. During the Inception phase you go "wide and shallow " across the complete project. You do not want to get stuck in the details when you know they will most likely change as the project progresses.

You might begin to develop some early approaches to possible solutions. You would do this through storyboards, use cases, and code. The ultimate goal of the Inception phase is to get enough understanding of the problem and the requirements for a solution that you can decide whether it is worth continuing the project and allocating additional resources to it.

Inception is almost always the shortest project phase. Some projects get into difficulties during Inception by trying to go too deep into the details of the solution. Avoid this temptation . As quickly as possible, discover what the problems are, what possible solutions might look like, who wants the product, and ”most importantly for commercial projects ”whether anyone is willing to pay for it.
