This Sure Sounds Like Waterfall

Sometimes it is difficult to see how a project is really working in an iterative manner, especially during the Inception phase. One criticism that agile practitioners raise is that it seems like we're just gathering requirements ”where's the code?!

Following RUP does not mean that you can't write code during the Inception phase. But you don't have to write code. We mentioned at the beginning of this chapter that during the Inception phase you are planning your trip. You will spend most of the time understanding your customers and their needs. Use whatever technique helps you in that effort ”write code, design storyboards, or produce any other type of prototype, if you feel that the effort will get you closer to understanding the requirements for the project.

In our case, we drew a few diagrams on paper or a whiteboard. We discussed what a possible system might look like. We went broad, not deep. We did not try to capture any detailed requirements.
