Exploring the Media Tab in the Project Pane

After you add a media file like Globe Corner to your project, you can find more information about the file on the Media tab of the Project pane. The media information is organized into columns, which you can resize, move, or hide. Let's take a look at the Globe Corner movie on the Media tab.

1.

Press Cmd-5 to open the Media tab.

The Media tab opens and reveals the Globe Corner.mov file.

NOTE

The Media tab shows all media that have been imported into a project, even if a file is no longer in the Canvas. Behaviors, filters, and other elements generated from within Motion do not appear as part of the project media.

You can resize the Project pane by dragging the right edge of the pane. Let's expand the pane to see more of the columns on the Media tab.

2.

Move the pointer over the right edge of the Project pane until it changes to the Resize tool (an arrow pointing left and right).

3.

Click and drag the Resize tool to the right to expand the Media view in the Project pane.

Each column reveals different information about the media file.

4.

Locate the Duration column.

The original media file is only 2 seconds long, represented by 2;00, but the entire project is 8 seconds long (8;00). To make the media file last longer, you'll need to loop it. To do that, you need to go to the Inspector. First, let's finish with the Media tab.

You can move a column to a different location by dragging its header to the right or left.

5.

Click the Duration column header and drag the column in front of the Kind column.

Your cursor becomes a Hand tool when you grab and move a column.

6.

Press Cmd-5 to close the Media tab and the Project pane.

7.

Press Cmd-5 again to reopen the Media tab.

The Media tab in the Project pane reopens to whatever size it was when you closed it.

Since you'll be opening the Media tab a lot while working in the Canvas, it's a good idea to change it to a more compact size.

8.

Drag the right edge of the Project pane toward the left so that the last column visible is the Duration column.

9.

Press Cmd-5 to close the Media tab.
