Applying a Simple Border Filter

Now you've seen the project with and without filters. You'll start without filters on the movie and then add them.

Let's apply a Simple Border filter to the two still images in the Frances Start file. Your goal in this exercise is to add a Simple Border filter to one image, adjust the parameters in the Dashboard, and then copy and paste the filter to a second image.

1.

Press the spacebar to pause playback, if the project is already playing.

2.

Move the playhead to 3;15 for a clear view of both still images in the Canvas.

3.

Press Cmd-4 to open the Layers tab.

The project has been organized into four layers: Titles, Center Square, Stills, and Background.

4.

On the Layers tab, click the disclosure triangle for the Stills layer to show the contents of the layer.

The Stills layer contains two images: tree crash and tree down.

Let's add a border to the tree crash object.

5.

On the Layers tab, select the tree crash object.

6.

Press Cmd-4 to hide the Layers tab.

The tree crash object is selected in the Canvas.

7.

In the toolbar, open the Add Filter pop-up menu and choose Border > Simple Border.

A simple border of a thin black line appears around the selected object.

Modifying the Border in the Dashboard

The Simple Border filter has Width and Color parameters that can be modified in either the Inspector or the Dashboard.

1.

Press D to open the Dashboard, if it's not already open.

2.

In the Simple Border Dashboard, drag the Width slider toward the right to increase the width of the border to 40.

The black border around the selected object in the Canvas becomes wider.

3.

In the Simple Border Dashboard, click the Color well to open the Colors window.

The Colors window opens with a solid black color wheel.

4.

Drag the slider on the right side of the Colors window to the middle position to raise the brightness of the black and set a medium gray border.

The color of the border on the selected object changes to gray. If you raise the slider to the highest position, you will get white, as illustrated within the slider.

5.

Close the Colors window.

6.

Press Cmd-S to save your progress.

Copying and Pasting a Border on the Layers Tab

You've finished the first Simple Border filter. Now you can copy it from the first object and paste it on the second object in the Stills layer.

1.

Press Cmd-4 to open the Layers tab.

2.

On the Layers tab, Ctrl-click the Simple Border filter applied to the tree crash object and select Copy from the contextual menu.

3.

On the Layers tab, Ctrl-click the tree down object and select Paste from the contextual menu.

A filter called Simple Border copy appears on the Layers tab below the tree down object.

Both of the still objects in the Canvas now have gray borders.
