Viewing the Project Elements on the Layers Tab

Before we get started creating a mask, let's look at the various elements that are used in this project. Except for Poly the 3D fish, all of the media used to create this project came from the Motion Content folder in the Library.

1.

Press Cmd-4 to open the Layers tab.

The project is organized into two layers. The top layer is the Scene layer, and the lower layer is the Background layer.

You can see that the Background layer has been turned off because the Activation check box is unchecked.

2.

Click the disclosure triangle for the Scene layer to view the contents of the layer.

The Scene layer is composed of four elements. The elements are organized from top to bottom in the same order as they appear in the Canvas.

The first element is the AquaBall object. This object was placed on top so that Poly could swim behind it to give the scene the illusion of depth. No behaviors or filters were applied to the AquaBall object.

The next element is a grouped sublayer of reeds.

3.

Click the disclosure triangle for the Reeds sublayer to view the contents.

This sublayer was created with one Grass Reed object from the Motion Content folder in the Library. I duplicated the original object six times and modified the size and position of each copy to make them look more realistic. Then I selected all seven Grass Reed objects and grouped them together to create a grouped sublayer.

There are no behaviors or filters applied to the Reeds sublayer.

4.

Click the disclosure triangle for the Reeds sublayer to hide the contents.

The Reeds sublayer is also above Poly in the composite so that she can swim behind them.

The next element down is Poly the fish. Her object is called fish_animation90 because she is composed of 90 frames of animation (3 seconds' worth).

The Behaviors icon on the right of the fish_animation90 object shows that at least one behavior is applied to this object.
