Introduction

There are many times when you are telling story that you'd like, in an onscreen timeframe of a few seconds, to indicate that a much longer period of time has gone by. This can be easily accomplished using the Passing of Time effect. This effect capitalizes on some of the skills you already have if you've been using Premiere Elements for awhile (or are familiar with another non-linear editor).

It also capitalizes on "best practices" within the software. That is, when you take a longer clip and cut it into smaller clips, and move those smaller clips or delete sections out of those clips, as well as manipulate each clip separately, you are following best practices for nonlinear video editing. In this chapter, we'll be adding transitions at the beginning of these clips so that they dissolve in and out from clip to clip.

For the passage of time to be convincing we will really be doing two things. First, we'll remove some time from the clip. How? It sounds like we have magic powers, but actually we are just deleting frames from the clip to remove transitional frames. For example, if someone crosses the room, we could leave the first part of the clip and the last part, but delete all the frames in the middle of the clip of the actual walk across the room. In this way, the actor is first at one end of the room and then suddenly they appear at the opposite end. By splitting the clip in two and applying a transition between the two clips, the actor slowly vanishes (dissolves) from the left side of the room while slowly appearing at the other end.

This effect works well any time you want to show the passage of time; for example, when a girl is waiting by the phone for her boyfriend to call. She can be looking at the phone. Standing behind the couch. Off in the kitchen. And back sitting on the couch, phone on her lap. By deleting all of the frames where she's in motion from location to location, and by adding a dissolve between clips, you can effectively communicate the sense of time passing.
