Making Adjustments to the New England Scene

When the clip of the pumpkin stand was recorded, the videographer zoomed in on the scene. This is fine and makes for an interesting clip. However, if we simply leave our "reporter" standing as she is, then the illusion that she's on the scene is broken. In order to create a convincing scene, we must also zoom in on the reporter at the same time, and to the same degree. In that way, it appears as if the cameraman zoomed in on a scene in which the reporter was actually present. We are also going to make a slight adjustment to where the reporter stands. We want her to stand a bit closer to the camera, and a bit off to the right (her left). We'll do that first.

Adjust the Location of the Reporter

To move our reporter, first click on the NE_reporter.avi clip on the Video 2 track to select it.

In the Properties panel, click on the Motion effect to select it (it reverse highlights to show that it is selected).

Tip

When you select the Motion effect, you should see a box appear around the NE_reporter.avi clip in the Monitor panel.

Click anywhere inside the box around the NE_reporter.avi clip in the Monitor panel and drag the clip slightly down and to the right, as shown in the illustration.

Tip

You can use the Motion effect controls to type in exact coordinates for Position, which are 450, 270.

Zoom in on the Reporter

The zoom action starts in the background clip, fallfoliage.avi, at 00;00;01;10, so we'll place a keyframe at that spot. Do do so, first click the Show Keyframes button to view the keyframes workspace.

Then, move the CTI (either the one in the My Project panel timeline or the one right in the keyframes workspace) to 00;00;01;10.

Click the Toggle Animation button (shown below) for the Motion effect to activate Motion controls.

Tip

You may need to click the triangle to twirl open the Motion effect controls, if they aren't already visible.

Tip

Keyframes should drop automatically. In case they don't, you can add a keyframe manually by clicking the Add/Remove Keyframe button (shown below).

Press the Page Down key on your keyboard to move to the end of the clip (your CTI should be at 00;00;05;03).

Click the Add/Remove Keyframe button for Scale (under Motion).

Change the Scale from 100.0% to 130.0%.

Tip

Now, when you click the Play button on the Monitor panel, or press the Spacebar on your keyboard, you'll see that as we zoom in on the pumpkin stand, we appear to be zooming in on our intrepid reporter as well.
