Adjusting the Elf s Starting Location

Adjusting the Elf's Starting Location

Now that we've cropped the second instance of the elfgarden.bmp clip so that the chrome watering can can act somewhat as an object in the scene, we will move our actor "behind" the watering can (or in other words, behind the section of the elfgarden.bmp clip on the Video 3 track that has not been cropped). This will create a very convincing illusion of the elf "peeping out" from behind the watering can. It's an illusion, of course, since the actor is really not that small (nor that green!) and isn't actually in the garden. But the illusion works like, well, magic!

Move the Elf to Add Believability to Her Hiding Place

With the elf.avi clip still selected, in the Properties panel for the clip, select Motion.

Tip

A box will appear around the elf.avi clip in the Monitor panel, enabling you to drag it across the screen.

With your mouse, click anywhere inside the box and drag the elf.avi clip until the elf appears to be hidden behind the watering can.

Did You Know?

It's a piece of cake to add more layers. Because you can have up to 99 video tracks in a Premiere Elements project, you could use the techniques learned in this chapter to create additional layers. For example, you could add a flower pot in front so that the elf could appear to hide behind, running from her hiding place behind the watering can to a new hiding place behind the pot. You could also create objects in the elf's "environment" that the elf could either pick up or push aside using this same technique or by filming the object first against a greenscreen. Have the actor act out lifting the object or pushing it. Then, in "post," place the object in the right position and use keyframes to make it appear as if the actor is affecting the object. As with most of the concepts introduced in this book, how far you take them is limited only by your own imagination.
