Adding the Video Clips to the Timeline

For this project, we have two video clips to add to the My Project panel. One, elf.avi, contains the footage of our actress that we will transform into an elf. The other, elfgarden.bmp, contains footage that we will use "as is" of a garden where the elf will appear. We'll arrange these two clips on the My Project panel's timeline one on top of the other, with the elf.avi clip on the Video 2 track and the background garden clip on the Video 1 track. Doing so will enable the background track, elfgarden.bmp, to show through elf.avi once we remove the green of the greenscreen.

Add the Background Clip to the Timeline

Start Premiere Elements and create a new project called enchantedelf.

Click the Get Media from button on the Media panel to access the Get Media from view, if it's not already active.

Select DVD, Digital Camera, Mobile Phone, Hard Drive Camcorder, Card Reader.

When the Media Downloader displays, click the Advanced Dialog button to switch to Advanced mode.

Select the following clips:

  • elfgarden.bmp

  • elf.avi

Click the Get Media button. Premiere Elements copies the clips from the DVD onto your hard drive and adds them to the Available Media list for this project.

Using your mouse, select the elfgarden.bmp clip on the Media panel and drag and drop it onto the My Project panel in the Video 1 track.

Tip

If you're in Sceneline view, drop it onto the first scene box. Premiere Elements will place it on the Video 1 track.

Add the Elf Clip to the Timeline

If you are in Sceneline view in the My Project panel at this time, switch to Timeline view.

Tip

To switch to Timeline view, click the Timeline button in the right corner of the My Project panel:

With your mouse, select the elf.avi clip on the Media panel and drag on drop it onto the Video 2 track so that the head (front) of the clip is at the very beginning of the track, as shown in the illustration.

Did You Know?

There are scenes unseen. We need to switch to Timeline view at this point in the project because we are working with multiple clips, and each clip needs to be on its own track. In Sceneline view, clips can only be added in sequence (one after another) on the Video 1 track for visual media (still images and video clips), or the Audio 1 track for sound media (narration, sound effects, and music).
