Applying a Blur Effect to the Image

By applying a subtle blurring effect to our clip, we can help achieve the overall blurred look that we're going for, and avoid hard edges in our final production. This step is very straight-forward and involves applying the Gaussian Blur video effect and tweaking the settings a bit.

Apply a Blur

Click the Effects and Transitions button on the Media panel to switch to the Effects and Transitions view, if it's not already displaying.

Type blur in the text box on the Effects and Transitions panel.

Select the Gaussian Blur and drag it onto the Title 01 clip on Video 2 track on the Timeline.

Go to the Properties panel for the Title 02 clip and click on the triangle next to Gaussian Blur to view the controls.

Adjust the Gaussian Blur this way:

  • Increase the Bluriness amount to 40.0.

  • Leave the Blur Dimensions as is (Horizontal and Vertical).

Did You Know?

Track mattes work best in black and white. This effect uses the Track Matte video effect as one of the elements that make it work. When you use track mattes for other projects, remember that you want to be sure that you are always using pure black (R: 0, G: 0, B: 0) and pure white (R: 255. G: 255, B: 255). Shades of gray will cause you shades of problems.
