Adding Darkness to the Nightime Clip

Adding Darkness to the "Nightime" Clip

To make the clip look truly like it is happening in the dark of night we need to darken it. With a simple adjustment to the Opacity setting for the clip, we can bring any clip, even one shot in the bright summer sunshine, into near total darkness a darkness penetrated only by night vision goggles!

Adjust Opacity to Bring on the Night

Select the nightsuspects.avi clip on the Video 1 track.

On the Properties panel for the clip, click the triangle next to Opacity to reveal the effect's controls.

Adjust the clip's Opacity to 80%.

Did You Know?

More "Noise" means less noise. When you use this technique on your own clips, remember that things are just quieter at night. After you've darkened a clip to make it more like night, you may need to also dampen the noise level of the clip. To do so, simply select the clip, and in the Properties panel go to the Volume setting. Click the triangle to display the controls, then drag your mouse across the Clip Volume number to soften the volume. If you do this while the clip is playing, you'll get real-time feedback on the clip's volume while you adjust it.
