Introduction

In the same way that adding music to your productions immediatelyalmost magicallygives them depth and power, adding titles can also provide an instant professional touch. Fact is, many home movies suffer from lackluster titles or no titles at all. Taking titles to another level, this chapter will show you how to fill a title with a video clip. Doing so has a dramatic "wow" effect that your audience will appreciate. It also gives your production the feel of a broadcast television show.

Having this technique under your belt may inspire you to plan, maybe even storyboard, a real "show." The subject of the show could be something along the lines of a "welcome to my life" video that takes the viewer around your house and your town. Maybe you can be the "host" and your daughter the cinematographer. This could be an interesting video to post on the Web for folks to view, or to send in the mail on a DVD disc to your friends and family.

When creating family videos, think creatively. This doesn't mean you have to stage everything (in case you're worried about things feeling forced). Just get everyone involved in the project. Even a movie about cleaning out the garage could be a great family video if done right.

If you get a nice opening title going, you can reuse it and perhaps create a weekly five- or ten-minute "broadcast" of your own. A number of Web sites exist that are fairly inexpensive that make it easy to upload videos and video blogs, or "vlogs." Your friends and family might even get used to "tuning in" to your weekly online show!
