Applying a Pen and Ink Effect to the Lower Snapshot

The Facet effect creates its "watercolor-ness" by defining geometric shapes, or facets, in the video or still image you apply it to. The effect also blurs the colors a bit, mimicking the effect of watercolor paints on paper. What you lose, however, is any sense of there being a drawing involved with the watercolor. To get that "pen and ink" look beneath the watercolor paints, we are going to add two different effects in a particular order (applied in the opposite order and the effect is considerably different, and harsher). We'll first apply the Gaussian Sharpen effect to bring out the edges that the Facet effect blurred. This will define the lines and begin to add the "ink." We'll then apply the Find Edges effect, which adds a faded, papery look.

Apply the Gaussian Sharpen Effect to the Snapshot in Video Track 1

Type gaussian in the text box in the Effects and Transitions view of the Media panel.

Important

Two Gaussian effects will appear: Gaussian Sharpen and Gaussian Blur. We are using the Gaussian Sharpen effect for this task.

Drag and drop the Gaussian Sharpen effect onto the watercolor_FF.bmp clip on the Video 1 track on the Timeline that is directly below the watercolor_FF.bmp clip on the Video 2 track.

Timesaver

The two tracks we're working with both start at 00;00;11;23 and end at 00;00;26;23.

Note

The Facet effect, the Gaussian Sharpen effect has no controls, so there are no adjustments to make in the Properties panel.

Apply the Find Edges Effect to the Snapshot in Video Track 1

Type find in the text box in the Effects and Transitions view of the Media panel.

Drag the Find Edges effect onto the watercolor_FF.bmp clip on the Video 1 track on the Timeline.

On the Properties panel for the clip, click the triangle next to Find Edges to reveal the effect's controls.

Select the Invert check box.

Adjust the Blend With Original setting to 70%.

Before the Gaussian Sharpen and Find Edges effects have been applied.

After the Gaussian Sharpen and Find Edges effects have been applied.

Note

While 70% is the correct setting for the sample file for this project, you may find that to achieve the right effect with your own clips on future projects, you will need to adjust this somewhere between 50% - 75%.
