Summary

The shell is the main interface between the user and the Solaris operating environment. It is also a fully interactive programming language. Solaris delivers the Bourne shell, the C shell, and the Korn shell as part of the standard release which, as of Solaris 8 , also includes three public domain shells : Bash, tcsh, and zsh.

The secure shell (SSH) allows secure, encrypted communication between hosts on a network, a facility that is essential when the hosts are connected to the Internet and are potentially vulnerable to external attacks. SSH also enables users to make use of secure, graphical (X Window System) connections, making the increased security restrictions virtually transparent to the end user.

A large amount of extremely useful software is available in the public domain, which provides flexibility and variation to the facilities available to Solaris customers ”the Apache Web server and Perl are prime examples. Both are used extensively throughout the UNIX world, with a large number of commercial software vendors providing software that is fully compatible with (or that actually uses) these software packages.
